🚨 Your "Emergency" Lesson Plan for May

May Lesson Plans: Done For You! ✅

⚡️ The May Survival Kit:

  • The Icons: Hook them with Nintendo, Ghibli, and Game of Thrones.
  • The 5-Minute Flip: A "Listen-First" hack for deep engagement.
  • The Toolbox: 10 free folk songs + the best site for General Music.

🎹 AAPI Heritage Month: The Names They Know

Don’t fight for attention this May—use the composers your students already hear every day. Bridging the gap between "Screen Time" and "Class Time" is your fastest way to engagement.

  • The Legends: Koji Kondo (Super Mario), Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli), and Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones).
  • The Modern Masters: Soon Hee Newbold and Dr. Chen Yi (10 Chinese Folk Songs).

Tale from the Trenches: The 5-Minute "Flip"

I used to show my students the video for Thomas Adès’ Cardiac Arrest right away. Big mistake. They watched, but they didn't hear.

Wait, Thomas Adès? 💡
While born in England, Adès’ family roots and name trace back to Syria in Western Asia, reminding us of the incredible diversity and reach of the Asian continent during AAPI month.

🚨 The "Emergency" Hack:

  1. Audio Only: Play the piece without the screen.
  2. The Hunt: Ask: Is the heart still beating? What made that "paddle" noise? Did the heart stop or did the piece just end?
  3. The Reveal: Play the video. Watch their faces when they realize it’s actually the pianist making those "paddle" noises on the keys, not a percussionist!
